Supporting Black Pound Day!

We were both honoured and excited when we were approached by Black Pound Day to give a virtual interview earlier this week, and were delighted to have been featured on their social media feed!

What is Black Pound Day

Black Pound Day was launched on Saturday 27th June 2020 and was founded by artist and So Solid Crew member, Swiss.

Black Pound Day takes place on the first Saturday of every month and is a solution-based approach set up to support the growth of the UK Black economy.  Black Pound Day invites all communities to promote and spend with Black businesses locally and online, by simply asking people to replace their usual purchases with services and products from Black-owned businesses, and uploading their receipts to add to the momentum.

Black Pound Day has seen an increase of revenue for several businesses across the country. The first Black Pound Day generated an additional £61,940 in revenue. This was based on the receipts submitted as evidence from consumers.

Why Black Pound Day

Black owned businesses contribute as much as £25- £32 billion to the UK economy annually. However, black owned businesses are still twice as likely to be denied a loan than a white entrepreneur. Black businesses also receive just 1% of venture capitalist investments.

Black Pound Day is a positive action to bring black business closer to an even playing field. Black Pound Day is not about boycotting non-black businesses. It’s simply about making a concerted effort to support black enterprises, and particularly on Black Pound Day.

Everyone can get involved. Black Pound Day invite all parts and sectors of the wider community to take part in Black Pound Day, and have created a comprehensive directory of products and services for Black-owned business to list themselves free of charge.

This is the virtual interview Nia Ballerina gave to Black Pound Day.

My name is Sharon McBean, and my daughter was and continues to be the inspiration for Nia Ballerina. I was searching for a music box with a Black Ballerina and wasn't able to find one anywhere in the world so created one! We have now added to the product range to include a Black Ballerina Doll, Rucksack and Hoodie.

My company has been in business since the first music boxes went on sale in August 2016 but it took almost a year from concept to having the actual boxes to sell.

Black Pound Day has given us a day where the emphasis is spending and promoting Black Owned Businesses, which has helped with increased sales and awareness. We have also collaborated with other brands on social media, so has helped with forming business relationships too.

Black Pound Day has created an overall awareness/consciousness of spending with black businesses.
